How do playful (rather than gamified) activities contribute to positive conditions for language learning? In this session we will review some of the core cognitive science on how our brains respond and learn in game-like, play-based approaches and make connections to the research on designing supportive language learning environments. We will explore mechanics of play and how they can spark novel ways of engaging students, carrying out formative assessment, and creating classroom community. You will leave with 20 playful approaches to experiment with in your own unique take on playful pedagogy!
