Every English language classroom is comprised of people with different motivations, identities, personalities, expectations, language strengths, and needs. In this session, we explore how to create a classroom community that recognizes, values, and respects different ways of operating in the world, providing a truly inclusive learning environment for everyone. Are the topics we choose inclusive and relatable? Do we vary our instructional approaches in ways that are highly responsive to learners’ strengths, backgrounds, and needs? Are learners given multiple options for demonstrating their learning? Do they have a voice in shaping classroom content? Using a checklist of inclusive teaching practices as a guide, the presenter walks the audience through multiple ways to assure everyone is seen and heard in our classes!
