After learning disruptions caused by COVID-19, many students need additional academic and social supports. Social Emotional Learning is an important tool for helping students manage changes and challenges of their new realities. Delivering instruction of strategies for social and emotional development and fostering language acquisition can happen simultaneously. This presentation will look at the five domains of Social Emotional Learning as posited by CASEL (the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning). It will offer practical ways to integrate each of the five domains into daily lessons so that students are using English to develop their self-awareness, as well as their relationships with others. Participants will discuss which of the strategies seem most doable and share their own ideas for integrating SEL concepts into their lesson. This session is geared towards teachers of secondary students, though tips can be useful at every level of instruction.
