Many educators tend to define literacy as the ability to read and write, but in the twenty-first century, ¬¬-literacy goes well beyond these two skills. In addition to this traditional definition, literacy is also defined as “competence or knowledge in a specified area.” This presentation will look at three types of literacies that will enhance students’ learning in the ELT classroom and beyond: Digital Literacy, Visual Literacy, and Cultural Literacy. The presentation will delve into the meaning of these “new literacies” and how they can be used to help students think critically, ask questions, and understand diverse points of view. Additionally, participants will discuss how these forms of literacy lead to a more inclusive environment and promote culturally responsive teaching and learning, allowing students to feel both empowered and valued. Participants will have the opportunity to develop lessons and strategies that support development of these new literacies and can share ideas on how to apply them at different ages and language levels.
