At different times during the COVID pandemic, it has proven necessary to resort to Emergency Remote Learning (ERL) to avoid interrupting school activities. Looking forward, there exist far more powerful and robust approaches that can handle both day-to-day learning, as well as crises triggered by disease or climate change. These approaches require hybrid learning design, which involves much more than the occasional videoconferencing session. We will discuss the different facets of hybridity, and how to leverage them to create learning environments that excel in both favorable and challenging contexts.
