We acquire language in only one way: when we understand what we hear and read. This talk will focus on one way of getting “comprehensible input” – through self-selected pleasure reading, especially fiction. Self-selected reading results not only in better language (vocabulary, spelling, grammar, writing style), it also results in more knowledge of a variety of areas, including social studies and science.
